First Day of School Fashion Sensibilities

These days our young fashionistas love to get their fashion on, to be on pointe with the latest trends in school fashion. My youngest Mandi is no different.  These are the years when her fashion sense dictates and my approval is still important to let her know whether it's a "fashion go", or "oh no you can't wear that" as us moms tend to do.

This year she wanted to shop in a discount trendy shop where all her friends do.  We visited the off discount shop Dee Dees. The fashion in Dee Dees had me going "Ahhhh", because the prices were oh so much less, and the styles were very trendy.  There were quite a few moms doing the same thing too.

Mandi wanted at least three bottoms and three tops that she would be able to coordinate together and with what was already in her closet. Here are a few items that she says are very popular with her friends for this season:

Plaid shirts are in.   She especially wanted one that had a self tab/button for the perfectly rolled sleeves.  We both noted that the shirt was shaped and not boxy which made for a better fit.

White Tees are a must.  She will wear the white tee on it's own or under a shirt.  I made sure she selected a tee that wasn't too thin, though she will still need to wear a tank underneath when worn on its own.

Khakis are a fashionable statement, even for teens.  She liked the fit of the pants above because they had no bulky pockets.

Graphic tees are also a favorite.  Her favorite city, "NY" on it makes it a big plus for her!  Can you see her NY attitude as she strikes a pose in this pic?!

Colorful tees make a statement.  But not just any color. This salmon colored tee gained her approval. No mint or yellows.  There was a yellow tee that I liked. Not for herThe other attributes that made her like it?  The pocket, and epaulet detailing ...she told me not to say that out loud...what's with kids these days?  Or else it's not cool.  It's also perfect because it was a longer fit, in this photo below, she rolled it up, liking the style-look of it.

Summer may almost be over, but white pants are very much in demand.  Would she wear all white, since I thought the white tee and it would go so well?  Ummmm, "Mom, no way"!  You cannot be seen in all white at school.  I live and learn for fashion.

Prints are in, and animal print makes a fashion statement. She absolutely loved these leopard print pants, though it looked like Cheetah print to me.  Do let me know if I'm wrong on this curvy divas.  The zipper detailing was not too over the top and the fit was good because they were pants but felt like leggings. They didn't hug as tightly.

This pants did not make it for her.  They were too short and had too many details.  I actually thought they were my throwback pair from the 90s!

In the end she walked away very happily with four tops and three bottoms. Not a bad haul for less than $100!!  It is a good idea to try other stores, not just the big ones.  When it comes to discount shopping you do have to look carefully at the clothing you select to make sure it is durable, of good quality and will last for at least one season!  We made sure all the zippers and buttons were functional and did the fit test of bending, squatting and sitting too.  Here's to a great year of back to school.

A Re-post: Red Carpet Reviews - 2013 American Music Awards

Another post of mine that was a write up for Orlando Fashion Week Magazine.  It was published there previously.  If you missed it, I'm sharing it again here on my blog for the first time, with some edits for relevance of course curvy divas. A writer's work is never done! Let me know which celebrity wore your favorite style! Did you watch last year's AMAs? Me too!  It was one of the best with my favorite Mr. Worldwide, Pitbull as host.  Did you catch the fashion that walked the red carpet?  No? Well, pull up a chair and I'll fill you in. At the 2012 award show, Christina Aguilera was beautiful in all her curvyness in a Pamella Roland dress, unfortunately, she went overboard on the suntan lotion.  Last year, she showed off a much leaner physique in a white Maria Lucia Hohan cut-out dress with a high split on the side.  Her shoes were Christian Louboutin peep-toe and I loved her pave jewelry. 10 Fashion Faux Pas to Avoid

Have you ever made some weird mistakes when dressing yourself curvy divas ? You know, those little fashion faux pas that really aren't a big deal but somehow they are?! I've seen people wearing socks with sneakers. ..I've never done that one, but I can understand why some people do it. Well, sometimes the dust and dirt gets into your footwear, or dries out your skin so wearing socks with sandals is a must....um, maybe NOT!!!lol! I've had visible panty line without realizing it. Sometimes it is just too late to change my outfit and so I just roll with the best of them!   A quick recover is to wear a long cardigan, or jacket (which I do), or just wrap your shirt around your waist to cover your assets...which might just be an even bigger faux pas! ~ chagrin ~ In their Beauty & Style feature on sheknows.com , they featured The Top Fashion Faux-pas ! In the previous mentions above, those two fashion no-no's are on the list! First on the list is "exposed...

Fashionistas - What's in a Word

You have heard this word before curvy divas , "Fashionistas"?  When it comes to anything to do with fashion and being fashionable, I am sure you have!  Do you know who coined the word and how it came about?  Well, first of all I didn't even realized that there was a story to the word, much less it being "coined" by any one particular person!  I just thought it was one of those words that came about and became popular because of its usage and in reference to anything fashion! According to Elle.com's Culture News, in an article by Rebecca Moss , the word Fashionistas was first created by Stephen Fried. In 1993, Fried, a young Journalist was writing a book about the Model Gia Carangi, who died very young, (sidenote-have you seen the [autobiography] movie of the same name, Gia? - I did and it is one to watch)!  Stephen met with people in the Industry and wanted a word that would represent who and what they were.  Because models and the Industry weren't p...
