Does Sustainable Fashion have a Future?

Being environmentally conscious is something I am learning to do and it is fast becoming a favorite topic of mine curvy divas. I believe that as time changes we are all learning to not just be aware of our environment but to act to protect it as well! We have to change our attitudes and behavior in our lifestyle so as to consciously help ourselves.

Last month H&M along with Vogue put together a panel of fashionably conscious people participated in a live discussion held at The New School for Design at Parson's, about "How can we create a more sustainable fashion future".

Once again I turned to one of my favorite online fashion source, Refinery29 where writer Glynnis Mapp shared more about this outstanding event!  The panel discussed ways we as consumers could practice sustainability in fashion, and also how the government could be involved. There was suggestion of a "by the pound incentive program for consumers..." and where "points" could be earned.  As for government being involved, they discussed how companies could gain from having sustainable practices by way of a tax incentive!

One of the panelists, Bruno Pieters, Designer & Founder of Honest By, shared that personally he wasn't happy that fashion was just "a tool to make money" and so he had a desire to create a brand where this wasn't his only focus, but one that would be "in sync with his own values, and be life-friendly", in other words, being aware of what he does and with whom, and making everyone accountable.

Also on the panel was, Catharina Midby, Head of Fashion & Sustainability for H&M, who shared that H&M hopes to make their consumers aware of how they can act more consciously in caring for their garments, making sure that they recycle, not just having unwanted clothing end up in landfills.  Simon Colin, Dean at Parson's, who was the moderator, asked some really great questions which led to an interesting forum!

This is a great way to continue the conversation curvy divas!  With us as consumers making more conscious choices, and designers, companies & brands being more aware, we hope will also make fashion more affordable for all! To see the other people on the panel, please watch the video below:

Global Fashion: For the Bride: Bridal Week in Barcelona

Tis the season for brides, in fact, it really is ANY season that a bride to be chooses to get married.  However many weddings take place from Spring to Summer.  It must be something about the warm weather coming back, and flowers blooming with that scent in the air...could it be romance?! I took a  virtual walk over to glamour.com and found some really beautiful photos of bridal gowns in an article written by Glamour contributor Kim Fusaro , in her article featuring Barcelona's annual fashionable event, Bridal Week.

Fashionistas - What's in a Word

You have heard this word before curvy divas , "Fashionistas"?  When it comes to anything to do with fashion and being fashionable, I am sure you have!  Do you know who coined the word and how it came about?  Well, first of all I didn't even realized that there was a story to the word, much less it being "coined" by any one particular person!  I just thought it was one of those words that came about and became popular because of its usage and in reference to anything fashion! According to Elle.com's Culture News, in an article by Rebecca Moss , the word Fashionistas was first created by Stephen Fried. In 1993, Fried, a young Journalist was writing a book about the Model Gia Carangi, who died very young, (sidenote-have you seen the [autobiography] movie of the same name, Gia? - I did and it is one to watch)!  Stephen met with people in the Industry and wanted a word that would represent who and what they were.  Because models and the Industry weren't p...

Day Two: Curvy Finds: Thrift Shopping Awesome

I love thrifting, do you? I have not stopped by our local Goodwill in a while and decided to go browse , just to see what I could find. You know what I love about thrifting at Goodwill? Their color theme discount.   If you happen to purchase clothing items and the tag is the color of the day, you get it at half price! A J.Jill Striped dress, a score on special discount! Now normally, I rarely ever get in on that discount . But it's thrifting, and they give student discount, whose complaining?   Not me!  I am really looking for certain items which I will share at another write up, however, I went in with an open mind and a promise not to walk out with too much stuff . I'm infamous for going in for "one item" and walking out with let's just say more than one!
